Ever wondered what the EU has done for Donegal? Here are some examples of where EU funding and programs have contributed to Donegal.
- Donegal’s infrastructure has improved greatly as a result EU funding.
Between 1994 - 1999 alone, 37 non-national roads in Donegal benefited from EU funding. More recently, the N15, the N56 and the Bundoran/Ballyshannon by-pass have received EU funding for upgrades and improvements
- EU funding has played a part in providing civic amenity facilities in Letterykenny, Donegal town, Lifford and Stranorlar
- Sewage and water schemes across the county have also improved as result of EU support, and coastal protection works at Ray/Rathmullen and Inver have also benefited
- Broadband capacity in the county has also received a boost from EU funding
- Cross border initiatives have seen EU funding with projects funded to increase peace and reconciliation along Donegal’s border with Northern Ireland
- EU funding has also played a significant role is boosting Donegal as a tourist destination with projects in Letterkenny, Bundora, and Ardara, among others, receiving EU funding
- Village and urban renewal schemes, and the EU supported LEADER program, have boosted the quality of life of people across the county and have helped to diversify the rural economy.
- €21 million has been spent on improving childcare facilities and access in Donegal
- The European Social Fund has benefited Donegal by investing in the county’s people through youth programs, adult education, employment initiatives and many more schemes
- The Donegal County Enterprise Board, which has received EU funding, has helped start-up and growing businesses across the county
