Cork County Report
Since Ireland's accession to the European Union, Cork has benefited hugely from EU funding.
- Cork City and County transport infrastructure have seen improvements supported by EU funding in projects such as the M8 from Fermoy to Mitchelstown, the Southern Ring Road and the upgrade of the N22.
Air and train links have received EU funding, including new carriages on the Cork to Dublin train route and easier access to Cork Airport.
- Cork City, and other major areas in the County have received funding to improve and upgrade water and sewage systems.
- EU support has helped develop and improve tourism by helping to fund numerous parks, nature reserves, museums, castles and theatres. See the full county report for a list of projects.
- Many towns and villages across Cork have benefited from urban and village renewal projects which aim to regenerate and conserve important public buildings and also improve people’s living environment.
- Cork’s agricultural economy has benefited greatly from EU funding, through CAP and REPs payments as well as the EU supported LEADER program, which aims to improve the quality of rural life and diversify the rural economy.
- €60 million has also been invested in increasing childcare facilities and access throughout Cork.
- Cork businesses will also be able to benefit from the €300 million allocated by the European Investment Bank to Irish banks, in order to lend to small and medium sized businesses.
- Cork's third level institutions are also able to benefit from the €600 million EU Financial Framework for Research and Technological Development, with UCC already accessing this fund.
